Project Overview
Active Steps is a virtual physical activity intervention for children with type 1 diabetes living in the BC Interior. Over 12 weeks, children and their parents take part one-on-one Zoom sessions with a physical activity counsellor. Each 45-minute session is guided by a workbook filled with age-appropriate learning materials and interactive activities. Children also set individual physical activity goals, which they track using a provided Fitbit Versa 4.
What Makes This Project Special
A customized Fitbit API integration, developed by our team, automatically pulls participant activity data into REDCap daily, requiring no action from users.

“Collaborating with the FoM Digital Solutions Research Technology Team has been a game-changer for our project. Their expertise in creating seamless participant workflows and enabling API integration has been invaluable. Thanks to the API integration, we can effortlessly access and monitor participants’ Fitbit data. This automation has significantly reduced manual data entry and streamlined our ability to track key activity metrics across the intervention period. The team consistently brings thoughtful, practical solutions to the table and collaborate with us in a way that feels both supportive and empowering. We are grateful for their partnership and excited to continue working together.”
