HEARTSMAP-U

Purpose

HEARTSMAP is an electronic psychosocial screening and management tool that was developed by the Divisions of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Psychiatry at BC Children’s in a project led by Dr. Quynh Doan. The tool was created for clinicians to assess patients that present with mental health concerns in the ER. It was validated for efficacy in the pediatric population and has been implemented at 50 emergency departments across 5 health authorities in B.C.

HEARTSMAP-U is a version of HEARTSMAP, specifically designed to help identify mental health concerns of university students, so that the students can be connected with the care they need as early as possible. The pilot project (with a proto-type of 80 students) showed promise, so the study is being expanded to 500 UBC students, with the goal of validating its efficacy and specificity in the self-assessment.
